From Q2: The Knights at (Le) Poisson Rouge
Q2 tells us, “New York is chock full of talented musical groups vying for their own niche in the current scene, and one ensemble that’s standing out valiantly is The Knights. In celebration of their second Sony Classical release, New Worlds, The Knights performed at (Le) Poisson Rouge in this May 3 concert, with a program including the contemporary sounds of Ljova and Erik Satie, coupled with the traditional harmonies of Antonin Dvořák and Franz Schubert.
As their name suggests, The Knights are much more than your average musical ensemble — in addition to a roster of dazzling instrumentalists who are gracing international stages as soloists in their own right, its members often play double-duty as composers, arrangers, singer-songwriters and improvisers who all share a deep-seated interest in not just traditional classical music, but also in popular and world music. In a fitting debut showing off their range of interests and musical bravura, the Knights’ first Sony Classical album juxtaposed well-known pieces of Dmitri Shostakovich with the politically infused Jimi Hendrix song Machine Gun.
