From Q2 Live Concerts CONTACT! New Music Odyssey
Alan Gilbert and the New York Philharmonic’s New Music Series in 2010

“Building upon its debut installment in 2009, New York Philharmonic’s New Music series CONTACT! enters its second annual edition this November with a concert featuring spectralist composer Gérard Grisey and the world premiere of Magnus Lindberg’s Souvenir (in memoriam Gérard Grisey). Music director Alan Gilbert conducts.

[Spectralism] considers sounds, not as dead objects that you can easily and arbitrarily permutate in all directions, but as being like living objects with a birth, lifetime and death.
— Gérard Grisey

Q2 is pleased to present three Web casts of the complete concert: on Wednesday Nov. 24 at 8 p.m., Saturday Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. and Tuesday Nov. 30 at 4 p.m.

WNYC’s John Schaefer hosts the opening November 19 CONTACT! concert from Symphony Space, while Alan Gilbert directs both the musical and conversational portions on the November 20 evening from the MET Museum. Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Magnus Lindberg joins the hosts on stage to explain his affinity for the music of the French avant-gardist Grisey, who passed away in 1998 at the age of 52 and under whom Lindberg studied while a student in Paris in the ’80s.
