“As part of our ongoing feature Names We Need to Know, I decided to send Cephas Bowles–who has been CEO and President of WBGO in Newark for 17 years–an email asking him to fill his Christmas stocking with names of people and trends we should be watching in the jazz world in 2011. BGO has been broadcasting jazz and blues since 1979 to the New York-Newark metro area (88.3 on the dial) and to the world by way of WBGO.org since 1998. The station is also planning to install a transmitter and antenna system in Times Square to enhance its signal.
Bowles, a native of Newark and a product of its public school system, commented on the staying power of radio: “There may be other ways to get audio, but radio continues to serve the needs of people who want local, up-to-the minute, curated information by battle-tested and knowledgeable hosts.” He also mentioned that smart phones and online delivery services are augmenting the way people get their news and tunes. “While these technologies won’t totally displace radio, they are alternative platforms where people go for content.”
