From Hammered! at Q2:”Spring Season Sample-Sale”
A pianistic preview of this spring’s Cued Up live music offerings
“Spring forward and fall into a new season of Cued Up. Tune in all week to Hammered! for daily previews of the composers, repertoire and performers we’ll feature on Cued Up’s spring lineup of live performances in New York City.
Starting Tuesday (after Monday’s general embrace of the spring season with nothing other than Igor’s Rite arranged for two pianos) we’ll provide piano previews of upcoming Cued Up Webcasts, beginning with a sample of Hungarian piano music as a preview for Cued Up’s April 3 Webcast of New York Philharmonic’s Hungarian Echoes Preview concert at the Greene Space. Tune in for the usual suspects of Gyorgy Ligeti, Bela Bartok and Gyorgy Kurtag, along with a few unexpected guests!
Wednesday and Friday will preview a concert by Signal and the Wordless Music Orchestra (June 5 Cued Up) of works by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, Philip Glass, Steve Reich, Brian Eno and others. Friday will be entirely devoted to the two minimalist figureheads, Glass and Reich, while Wednesday will combine works by Radiohead and Greenwood with composers Greenwood has identified as being influential not only on his own compositions but also on his work with Radiohead. Those include, but are not limited to, Olivier Messiaen, Krzysztof Penderecki, and — in a dually functioning preview of his composer portrait concert performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (May 22 Cued Up) — Mario Davidovsky.
That leaves Thursday for a program devoted to the Polish avant-garde, the recent subject of the 2011 FOCUS! Festival at the Juilliard School. Cued Up will share some highlights from the festival on a May 8 Webcast while Hammered!, in the meantime, offers works by Henryk Gorecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Jakub Cuipinski, and some very very late Frederic Chopin (his Op. 68 Mazurkas, among other gems).
