From Cued Up [On Q2]: “Kronos Quartet and the Young People’s Chorus “
Commissions and Premieres by Terry Riley, Laurie Anderson, Michael Gordon, Maria Schneider and Aleksandra Vrebalov
Sunday, April 10, 2011
“This Sunday at 2 p.m., listen to the Kronos Quartet share the stage with the Young People’s Chorus of New York City at this watershed performance from (Le) Poisson Rouge. The concert covers some serious ground, with works by Terry Riley and Michael Gordon; and premieres by Laurie Anderson, Maria Schneider and Aleksandra Vrebalov.
Always relevant, the quartet has been engaging both the popular and the esoteric for some 30 years now. Not that they need an introduction by any means, but just in case you missed it, their C.V. includes collaborations with cultural icons like Riley, Allen Ginsberg and David Bowie.
Here they team up with the YPC, the internationally recognized children’s chorus, who, along with Kronos, co-commissioned Michael Gordon’s piece, Exalted and Terry Riley’s Another Secret eQuation, both heard on this episode of Cued Up. You’ll also hear four premieres:Flow (Anderson),spell no. 4 (Vrebalov), a Greek traditional called Smyrneiko Minore (arranged by Jacob Garchik) and String Quartet No. 1, by big band superstar Maria Schneider.
This recording documented the first of two Kronos concerts that took place at (Le) Poission Rouge on October 8 and 9, 2010. Q2 will be streaming the second installment on April 24, 2011.”
