From Nadia Sirota on Q2: “More Bang on a Can for Your Buck”
Bang on a Can Marathon (Stephanie Berger)
Some people say that summer starts with Memorial Day. I say it starts with the annual Bang on a Can Marathon concert. I love camping out at the World Financial Center for the day and absorbing 12+ hours of new music the way some of my fellow guidettes absorb the rays of the sun on the Jersey Shore. (Plus, you don’t have to worry about slathering on SPF for BOAC.) The holy trinity of Michael Gordon, David Lang and Julia Wolfe have been serving up these new music benders for almost 25 years—the marathon is almost old enough to rent a car!—and each year it’s mind-boggling how they make the logistics of getting hundreds of performers into one space in one day.
I can’t wait for this Sunday’s show—Asphalt Orchestra playing Björk and Goran Bregovic! Signal performing Julia Wolfe’s Cruel Sister! Talea Ensemble coming back with more Fausto Romitelli! A world premiere from Todd Reynolds!—but there’s still six days to go. That’s twelve marathons’ worth of wait! So we’re doing our best at Q2 to fill 20 of those hours with more Bang on a Can awesomeness than anyone should be allowed to have. We’re previewing the fantastic composers and performers on this year’s lineup and revisiting private live recordings from the ghosts of marathons past, getting you pumped for Sunday’s big game.
