    The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), led by Artistic Director Clarice Jensen, is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily the work of American composers. ACME’s dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among both classical and rock crowds. NPR calls them “contemporary music dynamos,” and Strings reports, “ACME’s absorbing playing pulsed with warm energy. . . Shared glances and inhales triggered transitions in a flow so seamless it seemed learned in a Jedi temple.” ACME was honored by ASCAP during its 10th anniversary season in 2015 for the “virtuosity, passion, and commitment with which it performs and champions American composers.”

    Starring Elisabeth Moss, the short film “On The Nature of Daylight” premieres today as part of the the 15th Anniversary reissue of Max Richter’s work, The Blue Notebooks. Originally composed in 2003, the reissue from Deutsche Grammophon features several bonus tracks, a special vinyl release, and a super deluxe edition due June 29th.

    Filmed in Toronto, Canada in March, 2018 by director George Belfield, with Steve Annis as Director of Photography, the six-and-a-half minute short stars Moss, a recent winner of, among other prizes, Golden Globe and Emmy Awards as Executive Producer of and Lead Actress in The Handmaid’s Tale. Moss – who calls herself Richter’s “biggest fan”– also produced the film, alongside Richter’s creative partner Yulia Mahr, Stefan Demetriou, Tarquin Glass and Max Brook.     ACME’s instrumentation is flexible, and includes some of New York’s most sought-after, engaging musicians. In 2016 at The Kitchen, ACME premiered Clarice Jensen’s transcription of Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc for ten cellos, the score of which had been lost since the premiere in 1981. Jensen transcribed a recording of the work to re-create the score. ACME has since performed Joan at the Met Breuer and will perform it at The Kennedy Center in spring 2018.

    ACME’s recordings appear on the Deutsche Grammophon, New World, Butterscotch, and New Amsterdam labels. ACME released its first portrait album on Sono Luminus in 2017, featuring music by members Caroline Shaw, Timo Andres, and Caleb Burhans, plus John Luther Adams.     ACME (American Contemporary Music Ensemble) performs the music of Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, including selections from Jóhann’s first concert in New York which took place at (le) poisson rouge with ACME in 2009. ACME artistic director Clarice Jensen also performs bc for solo cello and tape loops, which she co-composed with Jóhann last year.     In what is a very limited engagement, Max Richter brings his album SLEEP to life for an overnight, eight-r live, orchestral invite only experience that will send attendees to their dreams. SLEEP will finally receive its New York debut at Spring Studios on May 4th and 5th, after having been performed in Berlin, London, Sydney, Madrid, Zürich, Paris, and Amsterdam, Austin, and Auckland.

    Replacing the traditional concert going experience, attendees will immerse themselves into an eight-hour overnight SLEEP experience complete with Beautyrest mattresses along with the ultimate night-time sound-track which is intended to send the audience to sleep; “the music is at times so soft and trance-inducing that you can’t help but slip into a relaxed state,” commented the Wall Street Journal. Scored for piano, strings, electronics and vocals, it’s Richter’s “personal lullaby for a frenetic world,” he explains, and “a manifesto for a slower pace of existence.”

    Jóhann Jóhannsson – SpectreVision Mgmt

    On Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 9:30pm (doors 9pm), the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), will perform the music of the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson at Le Poisson Rouge (158 Bleecker St., NYC) as part of the venue’s 10th anniversary celebration, LPR X. The concert will include selections from Jóhannsson’s first concert in New York, which took place in 2009 at Le Poisson Rouge, with ACME. ACME artistic director Clarice Jensen will also perform bc for solo cello and tape loops, a piece that she co-composed with Jóhannsson last year, which is included on her 2018 debut solo album For this from that will be filled (Miasmah).

    ACME frequently toured and recorded with Jóhannsson from 2009 until his death in February 2018. The group commissioned Jóhannsson to write his hour-long work for quartet and choir, Drone Mass, for its 10th anniversary in 2015; ACME premiered the piece at the Met Museum that year and later performed it at the Sacrum Profanum Festival, Big Ears, and Duke Performances. ACME will next perform Drone Mass on June 18, 2018 at the Summer Nostos Festival in Athens, Greece, with Paul Hillier and Theatre of Voices.

    ACME players for the June 10 concert at LPR are Clarice Jensen, cello; Ben Russell, violin; Laura Lutzke, violin; Caleb Burhans, viola.

    Jóhann Jóhannsson was a Berlin-based composer originally from Iceland. His varied and eclectic output includes commissioned works for Bang on a Can, Theatre of Voices, American Contemporary Music Ensemble, the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, and more. His debut album Englabörn appeared in 2002; he released eight solo albums on the Touch, 4AD, and Deutsche Grammophon labels. He also composed music for the theatre, dance and film, including the film scores for The Theory of Everything (2014), Sicario (2015), and Arrival (2016). In 2015, he won the Golden Globe and received Oscar, BAFTA, Grammy and Critics’ Choice nominations for his score for The Theory of Everything. In 2010, Jóhannsson collaborated with the American avant-garde filmmaker Bill Morrison on The Miners’ Hymns, a lyrical and reflective response to Britain’s lost industrial past and the heritage of the mining communities of Northeast England. In 2015, Drone Mass, Jóhannsson’s piece commissioned and performed by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) was premiered at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Jóhannsson premiered another ambitious project at Manchester International Festival in 2017 – Last and First Men, in which Jóhannsson’s symphonic soundtrack is paired with text based on Olaf Stapledon’s sci-fi novel read by Tilda Swinton, and footage shot by Sturla Brandth Grøvlen in the former Yugoslavia.

    The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), led by Artistic Director Clarice Jensen, is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily the work of American composers. The flexible ensemble presents fresh work by living composers alongside the classics of the contemporary. ACME’s dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among both classical and rock crowds. NPR calls them “contemporary music dynamos,” and Strings reports, “ACME’s absorbing playing pulsed with warm energy. . . Shared glances and inhales triggered transitions in a flow so seamless it seemed learned in a Jedi temple.” ACME was honored by ASCAP during its 10th anniversary season in 2015 for the “virtuosity, passion, and commitment with which it performs and champions American composers.”


    ACME’s instrumentation is flexible, and includes some of New York’s most sought-after, engaging musicians. Notable highlights of ACME’s 2017-2018 season include a performance with Meredith Monk as part of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, Auckland Arts Festival with Max Richter performing his 8-hour work Sleep, and performances presented by the Festival of New American Music at Sacramento State, Kennesaw State’s Festival of New Music, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kitchen, The Lot Radio, and The Kennedy Center.

    World premieres given by ACME include Ingram Marshall’s Psalmbook, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Drone Mass (commissioned by ACME), Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello, Phil Kline’s Out Cold, William Brittelle’s Loving the Chambered Nautilus, Timo Andres’ Senior and Thrive on Routine, Caleb Burhans’ Jahrzeit, and many more. In 2016 at The Kitchen, ACME premiered Clarice Jensen’s transcription of Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc for ten cellos, the score of which had been lost since the premiere in 1981. Jensen transcribed a recording of the work to re-create the score. ACME has since performed Joan at the Met Breuer and will perform it at The Kennedy Center in spring 2018.

    ACME’s recordings appear on the Deutsche Grammophon, New World, Butterscotch, and New Amsterdam labels. ACME released its first portrait album on Sono Luminus in 2017, featuring music by members Caroline Shaw, Timo Andres, and Caleb Burhans, plus John Luther Adams. The Strad raved, “Warmth and care are fully evident in the ensemble’s immaculate, considered performances – the four composers could hardly wish for more committed, convincing accounts of their music.”

    From ACME: “Cellist Clarice Jensen Celebrates Release of Debut Solo Album with Ambient Church Series Concert”

    Cellist Clarice Jensen, artistic director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), releases her debut solo album, For this from that will be filled , worldwide on Miasmah Recordings on April 6, 2018. She celebrates the release with a concert featuring music from the album presented by the Ambient Church Series on April 7, 2018 at 8pm (doors 7pm), at Bushwick Methodist Church (1139 Bushwick Ave.). The Ambient Church concert also celebrates the release of electronic artist Christina Vantzou’s new album, No. 4, and includes the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), Steve Hauschildt, Deradoorian, John Also Bennett, and C. Lavender.

    Building on a long and romantic tradition of solo cello repertoire in For this from that will be filled, Jensen expands and confuses the familiar sound of solo cello through the use of effects pedals, multi-tracking, and tape loops recorded at variable speeds. The album includes music Jensen conceived of and wrote with Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (bc, track one). Jensen collaborated and toured with Jóhannsson from 2009 until his death in February 2018, often with her group ACME. The album also features music she has written for herself (For this from that will be filled a and b, tracks three and four), and Michael Harrison’s Cello Constellations (track two) for multi-tracked cello and sine tones, written for Jensen, which meditates on long tones sustained on the acoustic cello among sine tones in an expansive experience of the harmonic series.

    Miasmah Recordings founder Erik K. Skodvin says, “With For this from that will be filled, Clarice Jensen has made an incredibly strong first album, which feels like a surreal and futuristic journey through an alternate timeline.”

    For this from that will be filled was originally conceived as a collaboration between Jensen and the artist Jonathan Turner as an audio-visual live performance which premiered at The Kitchen in New York City in 2017. The Ambient Church performance will include his visuals, and the album artwork by Turner is based on the projection environment of the live performance.

    For this from that will be filled a and b were co-produced by Clarice Jensen and Francesco Donadello and recorded by Donadello at Voxton Studios Berlin. bc was written and produced by Jensen and Jóhann Jóhannsson, with Donadello as co-producer, and recorded at Voxton Studios Berlin.     The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), led by Artistic Director Clarice Jensen, is dedicated to the outstanding performance of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, primarily the work of American composers. The flexible ensemble presents fresh work by living composers alongside the classics of the contemporary. ACME’s dedication to new music extends across genres, and has earned them a reputation among both classical and rock crowds. NPR calls them “contemporary music dynamos,” and Strings reports, “ACME’s absorbing playing pulsed with warm energy. . . Shared glances and inhales triggered transitions in a flow so seamless it seemed learned in a Jedi temple.” ACME was honored by ASCAP during its 10th anniversary season in 2015 for the “virtuosity, passion, and commitment with which it performs and champions American composers.”


    ACME’s instrumentation is flexible, and includes some of New York’s most sought-after, engaging musicians. Notable highlights of ACME’s 2017-2018 season include a performance with Meredith Monk as part of Lincoln Center’s White Light Festival, Auckland Arts Festival with Max Richter performing his 8-hour work Sleep, and performances presented by the Festival of New American Music at Sacramento State, Kennesaw State’s Festival of New Music, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Kitchen, The Lot Radio, and The Kennedy Center.

    World premieres given by ACME include Ingram Marshall’s Psalmbook, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Drone Mass (commissioned by ACME), Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello, Phil Kline’s Out Cold, William Brittelle’s Loving the Chambered Nautilus, Timo Andres’ Senior and Thrive on Routine, Caleb Burhans’ Jahrzeit, and many more. In 2016 at The Kitchen, ACME premiered Clarice Jensen’s transcription of Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc for ten cellos, the score of which had been lost since the premiere in 1981. Jensen transcribed a recording of the work to re-create the score. ACME has since performed Joan at the Met Breuer and will perform it at The Kennedy Center in spring 2018.

    ACME’s recordings appear on the Deutsche Grammophon, New World, Butterscotch, and New Amsterdam labels. ACME released its first portrait album on Sono Luminus in 2017, featuring music by members Caroline Shaw, Timo Andres, and Caleb Burhans, plus John Luther Adams. The Strad raved, “Warmth and care are fully evident in the ensemble’s immaculate, considered performances – the four composers could hardly wish for more committed, convincing accounts of their music.”

    ACME’s many collaborators have included The Richard Alston Dance Company, Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance, Gibney Dance, Satellite Ballet, Jóhann Jóhannsson, actress Barbara Sukowa, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, Blonde Redhead, Grizzly Bear, Low, Matmos, Jeff Mangum, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Roomful of Teeth, Lionheart, and Theo Bleckmann.

    The American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME), champions of modern American music, perform at Kennesaw State on Friday, March 9 as part of the School of Music’s 2017-18 Signature Series.

    We’re looking forward to Kennesaw State University’s Festival of New Music next week! Excited to play Caleb Burhans’ gorgeous Jahrzeit string quartet, plus works by Timo Andres, Caroline Shaw, John Luther Adams, and Arvo Part.

    On March 9, ACME will perform works inspired by the group’s debut portrait album, Thrive on Routine, which highlights ACME’s make-up of performers who are also composers. ACME will perform Caleb Burhans’ Jahrzeit, Caroline Shaw’s Gustave la Gray, and Timo Andres’ Thrive on Routine. The ensemble will also perform John Luther Adams’ moving string quartet The Wind in High Places and Arvo Pärt’s Fratres. Thrive on Routine was proclaimed by Gramophone as “a bounty of appealing recent works,” while The Strad raved “Warmth and care are fully evident in the ensemble’s immaculate, considered performances – the four composers could hardly wish for more committed, convincing accounts of their music.” Thrive on Routine was also featured as “Album of the Week” on New York Public Radio’s New Sounds/Q2 Music and was one of the top albums of the year in such diverse media outlets as Yahoo! Music, Iowa Public Radio, Classical Dark Arts, the Chicago Reader, and more.
