We hope you can join us on Thursday, June 7 for our annual VIP Benefit and a truly spectacular NIGHT OF AWESOMENESS, offering a lineup of incredible performers and performances.

The VIP portion begins at 6:30pm, and includes dinner, drinks, a special performance by Sō, and a celebration of the incredible Sara Coffey, our Benefit Honoree! Tickets are $300 per person, and help support our mission and operations.

THEN, at 8:30pm, doors open to the public for the NIGHT OF AWESOMENESS (included in the VIP ticket, or available for $20 per person).

What is a “Night of Awesomeness?”
It is a variety show of our favorite music and people. It has no consistent theme other than “awesomeness,” which is arbitrated by what we like. Some of the most fascinating people we’ve ever known and worked with have agreed to join us for this party, offering performances ranging from hard-hitting contemporary classical music to toe-tappers and show stoppers.

“Night of Awesomeness” includes:

Balún, with Angelica Negrón, a wonderful artist whom we’ve known for a number of years. Angelica will be writing a new work for Sō Percussion this summer, and Balún grew out of the indie scene in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Grey Mcmurray is featured on our studio album “Where (we) Live.” His guitar mastery and sensitive composition makes him an enthralling figure in our scene.

Damsel is a unique neo-folk duo whose songwriting style borrows from bluegrass, folk, contemporary classical, and many other influences.

Sandbox Percussion represents the next generation of frighteningly gifted chamber music groups, a wave that has followed our work.

Dither Quartet is the ensemble-in-residence for this year’s Sō Percussion/New Music USA residency program. We share the kinship of “four-of-the-same” groups. We have worked with many of the same composers from the New York and Brooklyn scenes.

Bobby Previte wrote “Terminals,” one of the most sprawling and ambitious pieces we’ve ever played. Having made his way in the jazz and experimental “downtown” scenes, he also retains a love for the percussion ensemble tradition of John Cage.

Shara Nova, aka My Brightest Diamond, is a true force of nature. We are delighted that she agreed to take a break from her tour with tune-yards to join us! Our collaborative project “Timeline” has toured to Carnegie Hall, The University of Texas at Austin, UCLA Live, and other venues. She travels between the indie rock and classical worlds with grace, glory, and tremendous joy!

The “artist”

Adam Sliwinski has been a member of Sō Percussion since 2002. Adam is particularly interested in keyboard instruments, especially marimba and piano.

Eric Cha-Beach has been a member of Sō Percussion since 2007-A consummate percussionist he loves to learn new instruments like the musical saw integrating them into diverse setups

Jason Treuting is a founding member of Sō Percussion- Jason has pioneered an innovative drum set practice within the new music sphere. He is also a composer.

Josh Quillen has been a member of Sō Percussion since 2006- Josh is an expert Steel Drum artist having studied in Trinidad and immersed himself in Steel Band culture.

Sō Percussion is a percussion-based music organization that creates and presents new collaborative works to adventurous and curious audiences and educational initiatives to engaged students, while providing meaningful service to its communities, in order to exemplify the power of music to unite people and forge deep social bonds.

With innovative multi-genre original productions, sensational interpretations of modern classics, and an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam,” (The New Yorker), Sō Percussion has redefined the scope and vital role of the modern percussion ensemble.

Sō’s repertoire ranges from “classics” of the 20th century, by John Cage, Steve Reich, and Iannis Xenakis, et al, to commissioning and advocating works by contemporary composers such as Caroline Shaw, David Lang, Steve Mackey, and Paul Lansky, to distinctively modern collaborations with artists who work outside the classical concert hall, including vocalist Shara Nova, electronic duo Matmos, the groundbreaking Dan Deacon, legendary drummer Bobby Previte, jam band kings Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Wilco’s Glenn Kotche, choreographer Shen Wei, and composer and leader of The National, Bryce Dessner, among many others.

Sō Percussion also composes and performs their own works, ranging from standard concert pieces to immersive multi-genre programs – including Imaginary City, Where (we) Live, and A Gun Show, which was presented in a multi-performance presentation as part of BAM’s 2016 Next Wave Festival. In these concert-length programs, Sō Percussion employs a distinctively 21st century synthesis of original music, artistic collaboration, theatrical production values and visual art, into a powerful exploration of their own unique and personal creative experiences.

Rooted in the belief that music is an essential facet of human life, a social bond, and an effective tool in creating agency and citizenship, Sō Percussion enthusiastically pursues a growing range of social and community outreach. Examples include their Brooklyn Bound presentations of younger composers; commitments to purchasing offsets to compensate for carbon-heavy activities such as touring travel; and leading their SōSI students in an annual food-packing drive, yielding up to 25,000 meals, for the Crisis Center of Mercer County through the organization EndHungerNE.

Sō Percussion is the Edward T. Cone Ensemble-in-Residence at Princeton University, where they offer educational work and present an annual series of concerts. They are also Co-Directors of the percussion department at the Bard College-Conservatory of Music, and run the annual Sō Percussion Summer Institute (SōSI, now in its ninth year), providing college-age composers and percussionists an immersive exposure to collaboration and project development.

One of the first things any group needs is a name. When our group was founded in 1999, we cast far and wide among our friends and family for suggestions. The winner was this simple, short word offered by Jenise Treuting, Jason’s sister.

Jenise has been living and working in Japan as an English-Japanese translator for 20 years. The word “Sō” was punchy, enigmatic, and memorable.

“The Sō in Sō Percussion comes from 奏, the second character in the compound Japanese word 演奏 (ensou), to perform music. By itself, so means “to play an instrument.” But it can also mean “to be successful,” “to determine a direction and move forward,” and “to present to the gods or ruler.” Scholars have suggested that the latter comes from the character’s etymology, which included the element “to offer with both hands.” 奏 is a bold, straightforward character, but lends itself to calligraphy with a certain energy that gives so a springy, delicate look.”

A Mind-Blowing Dada Performance Salon Celebrating the NYC Launch of MAINTENANT 12 Dada Journal

Prepare for an evening of incredibly provocative, eclectic art and performance on as Three Rooms Press presents THE DADA DOZEN, a madcap Dada Salon at NYC’s renowned independent venue Le Poisson Rouge. The event includes the NYC launch of the internationally-renowned MAINTENANT 12: Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art (2018, Three Rooms Press), featuring more than 190 visual and literary works by artists and writers from around the world, in full color.

Be there: Wednesday, June 6, doors 6:30, show 7 pm in The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street (at Thompson), New York. Costumes encouraged: “Come as you aren’t.”

Three Rooms Press co-directors and New York-based performance artists Peter Carlaftes and Kat Georges will host. Featured performers include contributors to this year’s journal engaging in a variety of dada live art installations, including: Joel Allegretti, Mark Blickley, Meagan Brothers, Billy Cancel, Steve Dalachinsky, Gabriel Don, Jeff Farr, Thomas Fucaloro, Heide Hatry, Aimee Herman, Bob Holman, J.C. Hopkins, Alfonso Iandorio, Ron Kolm, Jane LeCroy, Patricia Leonard, Sophie Malleret, Lois Kagan Mingus, Valery Oisteanu, Anna O’Meara, Jane Ormerod, Kathleen Reichelt, Wesley Rickert, John Paul, Martina Salisbury, Katherine Sloan, Ann F. Unger, George Wallace, and Joanie H.F. Zosike.

MAINTENANT 12: A Journal of Contemporary Dada Writing and Art serves up the controversial theme, “WE ARE ALL A ‘LIKE’.” With the rise in social media use—and abuse—the concept of “like” has reached whole new levels. There’s the idea of an individual’s reaction to events, people, images, etc. as a reduction to “Like” or “Dislike” without need for deeper consideration. Then there is the status factor: that something which is “Liked” by the largest number of people is of value. In fact, in the social media orbit, it is seemingly beneficial to offer strong, sharp, simplistic opinions—instead of nuanced, deeper, shaded considerations—simply because they provoke the greatest likelihood of widespread attention. How will this reduction of thought shape the future of interpersonal relations, intellectual advancement, and politics? As we teeter on the brink of nuclear war, the concept of Dada brilliantly encompasses the urgency of present times with both clarity and purposeful confusion.

The MAINTENANT series, established in 2005, gathers the work of renowned and emerging dada artists and writers from around the world. The series has been archived in leading international institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art–New York, the BelVUE Museum–Brussels, and more. Renowned contributors have included artists Mark Kostabi, Raymond Pettibon, Giovanni Fontana, Jean-Jacques Lebel, and Kazunori Murakami. Writers have included Allen Ginsberg, Gerard Malanga, Charles Plymell, Jerome Rothenberg, and more, with a strong contingent of punk musician-artist-writers including Grant Hart, Mike Watt, and Exene Cervenka.

To celebrate the seventh year of The Dirty Blondes, the feminist-minded theater company will present the special event DRAG to raise funds for its seventh season.

DRAG will be a celebration of inclusivity and femininity, deconstructing stereotypes, defying expectations and honoring individuality – everything The Dirty Blondes stands for as a theater company. DRAG will feature a roster of performers who are at the cutting edge of drag – unique storytellers who use the performance of drag to push boundaries and challenge preconceived notions of the art form itself. Our mission is feminist in nature, with a goal to break down stereotypes and encourage a nuanced, inclusive dialog. Founded in New York City by Artistic Director Ashley Jacobson and Executive Director Elizabeth Sarkady in 2012, we seek to explore the nature of all human prejudice, subverting face value perception with sophisticated and subtle shades of distinction.

The Dirty Blondes Theater Company has produced over 20 works of new theater featuring the talent of more than 500 artists willing to use the stage to create visually stunning and emotionally truthful pieces of theater.



Notable productions include the Off-Broadway premiere of Jacobson’s (Winner, Overall Excellence in Playwriting, 2015 FringeNYC) THE AMERICAN PLAY at the Soho Playhouse; THE RESISTER PROJECT, an eight-day ACLU fundraising festival, featuring 51 artists in a revolving schedule of plays, songs, poetry and comedy; SEX by Mae West, a staged reading series spotlighting the icon’s famously banned play followed by discussions with sex workers and feminist historians; and DETROIT, NY a short play festival featuring seven Detroit-based playwrights, aiming to shed light on Detroit’s shifting culture and state of bankruptcy. The Dirty Blondes are resident artists at Horse Trade Theater, producing in its celebrated downtown venues Under St. Mark’s and The Kraine Theater.

Glace Chase (emcee)

Glace Chase is a multiple award winning multi-disciplinary drag performer / playwright / comedian / screenwriter / tour guide / bon vivant. She hosts & performs across NYC – including Neurotica at Metropolitan Bar (1st Saturdays), Singaling comedy karaoke at Belle Reve (Wednesdays), Disgustation at Rosemont (Fridays) & various bingo gigs at Le Poisson Rouge & Madame Maries. Time Out NY has described her as “a “bonkers drag darling”… “delightfully satanic” & “not to be missed”. Her acclaimed 5 star Trip Advisor reviewed underground lgbt walking tour Dream Queen Tours won best Alternative Tour 2018 – International Tourism & Hospitality Awards. Bear Lee Legal

Bear Lee Legal is an anarchist and androgynous self-described punk rock mermaid drag queen here to fuck with gender, break the rules, and make a damn mess while doing it.Typically you can find this queen wandering around Brooklyn covered in blood, or at their fave monthly show Queer as in Fuck You (also usually covered in blood.

Chris Tyler

Chris Tyler is a performing artist examining the intersections of popular culture, collective action and digital identity. Recent projects include the ongoing MAKE AMERICA series (Ars Nova), flesh failure (The Civilians’ R&D Group), R*NT (University Settlement), and TOTAL REJECTS LIVE!!! (Public Theater/Under the Radar Festival). His performance style has been called “equal parts hilarious and chilling” (Fusion) and “precise-yet-butchered” (Out Magazine). AB: Brown University. Dynasty

Dynasty is an up-and-coming fashion forward drag queen diva who pushes the boundaries of drag, gender, and of course, fashion, at parties and events all throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Donald C. Shorter Jr

Donald is an artist living in Bushwick, Bk and has holds a B.A. in Liberal Studies from West Chester University with a minor in Dance and an M.F.A. in Dance from NYU Tisch School of the Arts. Labels such as activist, choreographer, dancer, singer, actor, gender nonconformist, and drag queen are interchangeable on any given day. Shorter is a former company member of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. During that time he had the honor of creating THE NAZ with Bill T. Jones, which was performed in his one-man show As I was Saying. Donald has appeared in Broadway national tours such as: Hairspray, La Cage Aux Folles, A Chorus Line, and Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Donald is the creator, writer, and performer of his one-woman show GENDEROSITY, which looks at the process of his drag transformation and uses drag to talk about gender nonconformity. Shorter has restaged choreography from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company at Barnard College, Towson University, and University of Idaho. He has premiered solo works at the Pompidou Centre, American College Dance Festival, ALLGOLD artist space at MOMA PS1, The Actor’s Fund Building, Center for Performance Research, 92nd Street Y, and at the Performance Mix Festival. Shorter is currently a co-host of the PBS Digital Studios web series First Person PB

Holly Box-Springs

Holly Box-Springs, who sometimes goes by the name of Nathan McManus, is originally from down south in the not so small town of Pearland, TX. Nathan grew up loving the stage and trying to figure out where he fit in the world of theater. Followed his musical theater career at OKCU then went Lamar University but ultimately the Big Apple’s call was too strong. So with first months rent, security deposit and a suit case moved to NYC in 2009. He put his first pair of heels on as Holly three years ago but had his first debut in So You Think You Can Drag at New World Stages. Now, two years later he picked up a sewing machine and now nicknamed “Queen of the reveals”. Nathan was raised by two incredible people, John and Renee McManus, who taught him how to treat others with respect and acceptance. He also was lucky enough to have an amazing brother Ian. Life is too short so if you don’t take that leap of faith, it’ll pass you by.

The musicians of The Next Festival of Emerging Artists present the World Premiere of Brett Dean’s “And Once I Played Ophelia” for string orchestra. Soprano Tony Arnold joins the orchestra for this powerfully intense work, based on the character from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. The concert also features music of Jessica Meyer, György Kurtág and Peter Askim.

The Next Festival of Emerging Artists is an immersive residency for young professional string players focused on Contemporary Music. The Festival performs the music of living composers, presenting World Premieres by composers such as Phil Kline, Aleksandra Vrebalov, Peter Askim, Peter-Anthony Togni and guitarist/songwriter Richard Thompson. The Festival also champions the next generation of cross-disciplinary artists through its Composer and Composer/Choreographer Workshops, led by Aaron Jay Kernis and Christopher D’Amboise. The Festival is the recipient of the 2016 Ernst Bacon Memorial Award in the Performance of American Music and has been recognized for innovative programming by Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award in Orchestral Programming.

Tony Arnold is internationally acclaimed as a leading proponent of contemporary music in concert and recording, a “convincing, mesmerizing soprano” (Los Angeles Times) who “has a broader gift for conveying the poetry and nuance behind outwardly daunting contemporary scores” (Boston Globe). Her unique blend of vocal virtuosity and communicative warmth, combined with wide-ranging skills in education and leadership were recognized with the 2015 Brandeis Creative Arts Award, given in appreciation of “excellence in the arts and the lives and works of distinguished, active American artists.” Ms. Arnold’s extensive chamber music repertory includes major works written for her by Georges Aperghis, Eric Chasalow, George Crumb, Nathan Davis, Brett Dean, Jason Eckardt, Gabriela Lena Frank, Fredrick Gifford, David Gompper, Jesse Jones, Josh Levine, David Liptak, Philippe Manoury, Carlos Sanchez-Gutierrez, Christopher Theofanidis, Ricardo Zohn-Muldoon, John Zorn, and numerous others. She is a member of the intrepid International Contemporary Ensemble [ICE], and enjoys regular guest appearances with leading ensembles and presenters worldwide.

With more than thirty discs to her credit, Ms. Arnold has recorded a broad segment of the modern vocal repertory with esteemed chamber music colleagues, and received a 2006 Grammy nomination for her recording of George Crumb’s iconic Ancient Voices of Children (Bridge). She is a first-prize laureate of both the Gaudeamus International and the Louise D. McMahon competitions. A graduate of Oberlin College and Northwestern University, Ms. Arnold was twice a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival as both a conductor and singer. She currently teaches at the Peabody Conservatory and the Tanglewood Music Center.

Peter Askim: Active as a composer, conductor and bassist, Peter Askim is the Artistic Director of the Next Festival of Emerging Artists and the conductor of the Raleigh Civic Symphony and Chamber Orchestra, as well as Director of Orchestral Activities at North Carolina State University. He was previously Music Director and Composer-in-Residence of the Idyllwild Arts Academy Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and served on the faculty of the University of Hawaii-Manoa, where he directed the Contemporary Music Ensemble and taught theory and composition.

A dedicated champion of the music of our time, he has premiered numerous works, including works by composers Richard Danielpour, Nico Muhly, Aaron Jay Kernis, and Christopher Theofanidis and has collaborated with such artists as the Miró String Quartet, Matt Haimovitz, Vijay Iyer, Jeffrey Zeigler, Nadia Sirota, and Sō Percussion. As a composer, he has been called a “Modern Master” by The Strad and has had commissions and performances from such groups as the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, the Honolulu Symphony and the American Viola Society, as well as by performers such as ETHEL, cellist Jeffrey Zeigler, flutist/conductor Ransom Wilson and violinist Timothy Fain.

Brett Dean: Following studies in Australia, Brett Dean travelled to Germany in 1985 and became a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra as viola player. In addition to orchestral career, he gave performances as soloist including numerous first performances. In 1988 he began composing, initially as an arranger. Dean worked in improvisation for radio and film projects in Australia. He went on to become established as a composer in his own right through worldwide performances of the ballet One of a Kind (Nederlands Dans Theater, choreographer Jiri Kylian) and by the clarinet concerto Ariel’s Music, which won an award from the UNESCO International Rostrum of Composers. Paintings from his partner Heather Betts have initiated numerous compositions. Since 2000 he has lived in Australia as a freelance composer. Leading interpreters of Dean’s music include Sir Simon Rattle, Markus Stenz, Simone Young, Frank Peter Zimmermann and Daniel Harding.

Jessica Meyer: With playing that is “fierce and lyrical” and works that are “other-worldly” (The Strad) and “evocative” (New York Times), Jessica Meyer is a versatile composer and violist whose passionate musicianship radiates accessibility, generosity, and emotional clarity. As a soloist and member of the award-winning and critically-acclaimed contemporary music collective counter)induction, Jessica has premiered pieces for solo viola internationally – expanding the repertoire for viola by championing new works while also composing her own. Of her recent appearance at The TANK Center for Sonic Arts, where she wrote a solo piece on site for this destination concert venue that boasts a 20-second reverb, Alex Ross of the New Yorker says, “Meyer’s fierce-edged playing activated the Tank’s awe-inspiring properties.” Meyer’s compositions explore the wide palette of emotionally expressive colors available to each instrument while using traditional and extended techniques inspired by her varied experiences as a contemporary and period instrumentalist. Recent premieres include performances by the Grammy-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth, cellist Amanda Gookin for her Forward Music Project at National Sawdust, soprano Melissa Wimbish for her Carnegie Hall debut, Sybarite 5, PUBLIQuartet, and NOVUS NY of Trinity Wall Street under the direction of Julian Wachner. Upcoming commissions include works for A Far Cry, flutist Allison Loggins-Hull for her “Diametrically Composed” project, and Sandbox Percussion with vocal duo Two Cities. As a performer, Ms. Meyer uses a single simple loop pedal to create a virtuosic orchestral experience with her viola, voice, and hand percussion. Drawing from wide-ranging influences which include Bach, Brahms, Delta blues, Flamenco, Indian Raga, and Appalachian fiddling, Meyer’s music takes audience members on a journey through joy, anxiety, anger, bliss, torment, loneliness and passion. Her solo show has been featured at iconic venues such as BAMcafé and Joe’s Pub in NYC, the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, and in Paris at Sunset Sunside. She is also committed to creating site-specific solo performances inspired by intriguing acoustical spaces, historic places, galleries of visual art, and unlikely concert venues that can provide a rich narrative context in relation to the surrounding community. Recent events include solo performances at the TANK in Rangely, CO and Art Space 98 to accompany a series of visual artworks by Thomas Bühler. Equally at home with many styles of music, Jessica can regularly be seen performing on Baroque viola, improvising with jazz musicians, or collaborating with other performer/composers.

At New Music USA, we see ourselves first and foremost as advocates. Our mission is to support and promote new music created in the United States. We do that in many ways, fostering connections, deepening knowledge, encouraging appreciation, and providing financial support. In recognition of the possibility and power inherent in the virtual world, we’ve worked to build a strong internet platform to serve our constituency. And that constituency is broad and diverse, from composers and performers to presenters and producers, casual listeners to die-hard fans. We’re truly committed to serving the WHOLE new music community.

As we go about our work, we make a point of not defining too precisely what we mean by new music. To define is to limit. It’s a spectacular time for musical creativity in part because so much music is being made that isn’t bound by conventional limitations of style or genre or background. The music that we hear being created in such abundance all around us is definition enough. We simply want it to flourish.

We’re fortunate to have as our legacy the history of previous decades of good works done by the American Music Center and Meet The Composer, the two great organizations that merged to form us in 2011. Their legacies have also brought a small financial endowment that mostly helps support our grantmaking. But we’re not a foundation. We depend decisively each year on the generosity of so many institutions and individuals around the country who are dedicated as we are to the advancement of new music and are devoted to supporting our work.

New Music USA is part of an international community of advocates for the arts. We’re members of the Performing Arts Alliance, the International Association of Music Information Centres, and the International Society for Contemporary Music. Those partnerships help us represent the interests of our constituents at every level.

No matter how far ranging our networks, our focus is always solidly on what brings these many constituents and communities together in the first place: the music. When someone uses our platform to listen to something new, recommend a favorite to a friend, or to seek financial assistance or information to support the creation or performance of new work, the whole community is strengthened. Together we’re helping new music reach new ears every day.

Starting off the 2018 Naumburg Orchestral Concert season on Tuesday, June 12, Ensemble LPR celebrates the birthdays of two living composers. The East Coast premiere of Thea Musgrave’s Aurora is part of a world-wide celebration of her 90th birthday. Inspired by lines from Act III of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the work represents dawn and the vast potential of youth. In honor of John Corigliano’s 80th birthday, Ensemble LPR will perform his The Red Violin: Suite for Violin and Orchestra with award-winning violinist Tessa Lark. In keeping with the group’s mission of presenting works by living composers alongside new interpretations of the standard repertoire, the concert will also feature a world premiere by David Handler—who is also the ensemble’s Founding Artistic and Executive Director—and performances of well-known favorites, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Serenade for Strings and Claude Debussy’s Clair de Lune.

Ours is a uniquely exhilarating moment for music.

The old hierarchies of taste have been called into question; the old distinctions of genre have been revealed as obsolete.

Never before has such an abundance of musical riches been so widely available to so many listeners — laymen and experts alike.

And yet, alone among the major art forms, classical music seems resolutely wed to anachronisms of tradition and ritual that first sprang up in the nineteenth century.

Indeed, a newcomer to classical music might be forgiven for wondering:

Why is the work of classical music so little a part of the larger cultural dialogue?

Why, in a city like New York, is the work of orchestras and composers of so little relevance to the lives of people who follow the arts, and to people who do not?

Why, among its peer art forms, is classical music the least nimble and most conservative in its patterns of thinking?

When did a genre dominated by genius and virtuosi become sclerotic, rigid, unresponsive?

Ensemble LPR is that newcomer.

Named after and headquartered at the acclaimed New York City venue Le Poisson Rouge, Ensemble LPR is an assemblage of New York’s finest musicians. The group personifies the venue’s commitment to aesthetic diversity and artistic excellence.

Ensemble LPR performs an eclectic spectrum of music—from works by the finest living composers, to compelling interpretations of the standard repertoire—and collaborates with distinguished artists from classical and non-classical backgrounds: Timo Andres, Simone Dinnerstein, San Fermin, Daniel Hope, Taka Kigawa, Jennifer Koh, Mica Levi, David Longstreth (of Dirty Projectors), John Lurie, Ursula Oppens, Max Richter, André de Ridder, Christopher Rountree and Fred Sherry, to name a few.

At New Music USA, we see ourselves first and foremost as advocates. Our mission is to support and promote new music created in the United States. We do that in many ways, fostering connections, deepening knowledge, encouraging appreciation, and providing financial support. In recognition of the possibility and power inherent in the virtual world, we’ve worked to build a strong internet platform to serve our constituency. And that constituency is broad and diverse, from composers and performers to presenters and producers, casual listeners to die-hard fans. We’re truly committed to serving the WHOLE new music community.

As we go about our work, we make a point of not defining too precisely what we mean by new music. To define is to limit. It’s a spectacular time for musical creativity in part because so much music is being made that isn’t bound by conventional limitations of style or genre or background. The music that we hear being created in such abundance all around us is definition enough. We simply want it to flourish.

We’re fortunate to have as our legacy the history of previous decades of good works done by the American Music Center and Meet The Composer, the two great organizations that merged to form us in 2011. Their legacies have also brought a small financial endowment that mostly helps support our grantmaking. But we’re not a foundation. We depend decisively each year on the generosity of so many institutions and individuals around the country who are dedicated as we are to the advancement of new music and are devoted to supporting our work.

New Music USA is part of an international community of advocates for the arts. We’re members of the Performing Arts Alliance, the International Association of Music Information Centres, and the International Society for Contemporary Music. Those partnerships help us represent the interests of our constituents at every level.

No matter how far ranging our networks, our focus is always solidly on what brings these many constituents and communities together in the first place: the music. When someone uses our platform to listen to something new, recommend a favorite to a friend, or to seek financial assistance or information to support the creation or performance of new work, the whole community is strengthened. Together we’re helping new music reach new ears every day.
